Star Utsab is the annual winter event of Priya Entertainments held in Star Theatre in north Kolkata at the last week of December in the festive air. Star Theatre of today symbolizes an interesting mix of sensorials - the luxury of watching a movie with cola and pop corn in a top class theatre, watching a leading band perform on the stage, the aroma of fish kabiraji, an adda with friends digging into juicy tandoori chicken and the choicest mocktail under the evening sky, relishing a family dinner with Bengali food and topping it up with mouth-watering ice creams- all at one place. Being held at such a vibrant venue Star Utsab brightens up the lives of the people from this part of the city that doesn't witness events of this nature so common to its counterparts at this time of the year. It is a winter festival with a difference. Inclusive in nature, it aims to touch upon various demographic groups including the senior citizens who are generally kept out of purview of such festivities. Little wonder the event runs to packed house every year.
Here is the tentative line-up of events in this year's Star Utsab. We have infused certain elements that go well with the cultural subtext of north Kolkata making it a celebration that people from this part of the city can own emotionally.
25 December Banquet Hall, 10.00am onwards
Morning
Fun with Santa: Cutting Christmas cake (by Santa Claus), fun-filled clay modelling contest with prizes distributed by Santa. Children have a great time here.
25 December Evening,Sandhyatara, 6.30pm onwards
Little Stars (Fashion show for the kids): This is a templated element of the festival and is extremely popular since its inception in 2007. It fetches tremendous response from the households of the catchment area and north Kolkata in general.
26 December, Sandhyatara, 6.30pm onwards
Madhubala to Katrina- A dance tribute to the divas of the famous Bollywood industry. Artists will perform the best of the dance music hits from the time of Madhubala to Katrina. The event will intricately showcase and articulately narrate the change in style and dance moves. Choreographer for this show would be danseuse Rubena Chatterjee.
27 December, Auditorium, 6.30pm onwards
We dedicate this day's program to all the music lovers, especially older age groups. The aim is to present them an enjoyable event with a touch of nostalgia. This year we have on offer 'Jalshaghar'- A concept concert to debut in this event, celebrating the 90 years of Birthday of the legendary artist Sri Uttam Kumar. Monomoy Bhattacharya will sing the evergreen songs of the golden era.
28 December, Auditorium, 12noon - 12 midnight
Unlike our regular theme every year, this year we have thought of celebrating the event with Natyo Utsab. The entire day will be dedicated to drama and theatres. Raga Music - a well known audio name in Kolkata will organize 4 shows throughout the day.
30 December, Auditorium, 6.30pm onwards
Bangla Band Live- In true synergy with the cultural texture of the other elements, we have proposed Reshad, from Bangladesh, because of a certain urban tune so unique of them, to bid adieu to the year and end the event one day away from the clutter of new year eve events all over the city.
